A Survey of Introducing Artificial Intelligence Into the Safety Critical System Software Design Process

Safety Critical Systems require software that has to be completely verifiable and predictable. This has prevented any use of artificial intelligence in safety critical systems or during the software development process. This increased detail to safety and rigorous manual work to meet the requirements has made the software development of safety critical software very expensive. Increased research and new AI concepts could be used to introduce AI into the development process of safety critical systems. Efficiency and high computing power of intelligent agents can be used to reduce the costs involved and enhance the software development life cycle. This paper will look at AI concepts and intelligent agents that could potentially be used in the avionics industry. The paper will then discuss how these agents can help at various stages of the software development life cycle and finally what possible business impact intelligent agents could have on the avionic safety critical system industry.
